Coorg is significantly more popular — it’s one of the most visited hill destinations in South India. Peak season weekends bring real traffic into Madikeri. The estate properties themselves are quiet; it’s the town and road access that gets congested.

Chikmagalur is less discovered. Weekends are noticeably quieter. If feeling like you have the landscape to yourselves matters, Chikmagalur is the better choice.

Food

Coorg is ahead. The local Kodava cuisine — pandi curry (pork), akki roti, kadambuttu — is genuinely distinctive and widely available in good local restaurants. Chikmagalur has fewer dining options, though the town café scene has improved.
